PARENTHESES ()

Parentheses enclose elements with less emphasis
or importance and could be left without damaging
the sentence. Commas or dashes may also be used
for its purpose.

Use parentheses to:
  • Enclose a part remark or a parenthetical expression. Examples: In this book (I borrowed yesterday) I have found many interesting ideas. The computer (an IBM one) has cost a lot.
  • Include numbers in an enumeration of scheduled items in a sentence Example: The Peripherals of this computer are: (1) Monitor, (2) speakers, (3) mouse, (2) Printer, (3) scanner, (4) mike, (5)keyboard.
  • Include words or figures that clarify what mentioned beside Examples: She is thirteen-years-old (13) They affirmed (After many tests) that the device could last many years.
NOTE:
  • Put a period inside parentheses only if the sentence enclosed is complete. Examples: They affirmed (Many tests had been done.) that the device could last many years.
  • Do not insert an element without relation to the rest of the sentence.
  • The punctuation inside parentheses remains within these parentheses. The punctuation of the main sentence remains outside.
